Can a Rock Grow? - Resources

How do rocks change?

Find out with this engaging, informative, and easy-to-read introduction to the rock cycle.

My fifth picture book is now available!

This new book, Can a Rock Grow?, is a fun way to learn about the rock cycle, discover how rocks change, and explore some of the unique shapes that rocks have. It’s a nonfiction picture book for kids from 4 to 8 years old.

Where did this book begin? In some ways, the idea for this book started back when I was working on Can a Tree Be Blue?

That picture book focused on different colors that trees can be. Colors are a fairly common preschool/kindergarten topic, along with other basic concepts, like shapes and textures, but most books look for shapes, patterns, and colors inside with tables, fabrics, foods, or other common household items.

I started looking for ways to explore those concepts through nature.

The year before creating Can a Tree Be Blue?, I had worked on a science-themed coloring book featuring all kinds of invertebrates. Plus, I'd started paying a lot more attention to the different kinds of spiders that live in my backyard.

That made it really easy to pick spiders for my next book, and Can a Spider Be Fluffy? explored all the different textures that spiders can be, from shiny to prickly to fluffy.

But shapes . . .

So many things in nature have unique shapes and patterns. Flowers, trees, the patterns animals use for camouflage come in so many different shapes.

Especially rocks.

Like so many things in life, the inspiration for Can a Rock Grow? started even further back than my other books, all the way back to my childhood.

Growing up, one of my neighbors was a rockhound. I didn't really spend time hanging out with him, but one of my brothers did. By proxy, I started hearing about things like obsidian and thunder eggs. I never became a rockhound myself, but I've kept a small sliver of interest in rocks all these years.

Some of those rocks that I heard about back then made it into this book.

Can a Rock Grow? is a book about the rock cycle, and it shows different ways that rocks can change over time, but it's also a book about shapes, exploring different shapes that rocks can be—flat rocks, round rocks, sharp rocks, and even hexagon-shaped rocks.

It's meant to be a fun, inviting picture book for those who already love rocks, as well as those who are just beginning to explore these mineral marvels.

With its focus on shapes, science, and nature exploration, Can a Rock Grow? is perfect for kids who love exploring nature and have big questions about how the world works, like . . .

What shape is a rock?

How does it get that shape?

And does a rock ever look like a rose?

Can a Rock Grow? is now available as an eBook on Amazon, as well as in a paperback format through Barnes & Noble, and other major booksellers.

I'm also offering hardcover copies through a small bookstore, Annie Bloom's Books, as well as on my own webstore, here
